George Town

George Town is located in the northeastern part of Penang and is the capital city of Penang State in Malaysia. It was named after King George III of the United Kingdom. The city serves as the political, tourism, and cultural hub of Penang State and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Malacca City in 2008.

Thanks to its serene and relaxing environment, George Town is regarded as the most livable city in Malaysia and the sixth most livable city in Asia. The city boasts many distinctive streets, each known by name and reflecting the early commercial activities or lifestyles along them—for example, Thô Khùa Street was once a hub for trading companies, Ya Koi Street was an area of coconut groves, Bull Ring Street was formerly a cattle farm, and Pitt Street was where the Acehnese community gathered. The city is characterized by its residential and commercial buildings, which showcase the historical legacy from the British colonial period starting in the late 18th century. Notable structures include the Clan Jetties, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, City Hall, St. George’s Church, Fort Cornwallis, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Pitt Street Mosque, Sri Mahamariamman Temple, and Weld Quay.
