Diantou Ancient Fortress is located in Diantou Village, south of Taiyuan. It served as one of the military strongholds defending the western gate of the ancient capital Jinyang and as a strategic garrison site for protecting the city. Built along the rising terrain of Mengshan Mountain, it is historically verified to have been established during the Sui and Tang dynasties and remained in use until 979 AD—the year when Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty set fire to and flooded the ancient city of Jinyang, leading to the demise of the Northern Han regime. Only then did it gradually transition from a military fortress into a village. Today, the village preserves 460 well-maintained stone-arched cave dwellings, each with unique features. The upper and lower levels are interconnected, allowing movement throughout, and the caves within each courtyard unit form an intricate network, showcasing the site’s concealment as a former military base, the sturdiness of its defenses, and the flexibility for preparatory combat operations.

Diantou Ancient Fortress is a remnant of a Ming Dynasty border fortification. It once functioned as a military pass and garrison site at the western gate of the ancient city of Jinyang. Over the centuries, it evolved into a civilian village and was still inhabited up until the 1990s.
