Victory Monument

The Victory Monument is located at the intersection of Phetchaburi Road, Phahon Yothin Road, Ratchawithi Road, and Dinso Road in Ratchathewi District, Bangkok, where it has stood since 1941. It is a military monument built to commemorate Thailand’s victory in the Franco-Thai War and has since become a prominent landmark.

In 1940, during the border conflict with French Indochina, Thai forces engaged in multiple battles with the French army, resulting in the sacrifice of many soldiers, police officers, and civilians. In 1941, this Victory Monument was erected to honor those who lost their lives in the war. The monument features a predominantly Western style, with a tall central obelisk that originated in Egypt and has often been used in war-related architecture across European and American countries. Its shape symbolizes both a military sword and a bayonet, representing boundless strength. Surrounding the obelisk are five bronze statues, representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and Civil Service.

The Victory Monument has become one of the most recognizable landmarks for Thai people. It is surrounded by a large square and bordered by various transportation stations. At night, under bright illumination, the monument takes on an especially beautiful appearance.
