After leaving student life, how many people haven’t stepped into a library in ages? Bangkok, once named a “World Book Capital,” has turned its city library in the old town (Bangkok City Library) into a magnificent venue. The newly opened library space blends classical elegance and modern design, drawing on both Eastern and Western architectural concepts. Spanning three floors, besides being free to enter and offering book lending services, it also houses exhibition areas and a café. This grand space offers book lovers even more imaginative possibilities for what a library can be.

City libraries reflect the development and aesthetics of different cities. Bangkok, Thailand was designated a UNESCO “World Book Capital” in 2013. To promote continuous learning and reading, the Bangkok City Library, located near Khao San Road, officially opened last month. It was renovated from a former building owned by the Crown Property Bureau, preserving the original Thai architectural structure. The space features large windows that let in natural light, while soft lighting and color schemes create a comfortable and elegant reading environment.

The Bangkok City Library covers nearly 4,880 square meters across three floors. The first floor, with its high ceilings, includes an exhibition area, a newspaper and magazine room, children’s books, a movie screening room, and the Book Café. The second floor houses domestic and international literary works, while the third floor features Thai books. Each area is thoughtfully designed, allowing visitors to choose their favorite spot and relax while immersing themselves in a sea of books—so comfortable you won’t want to leave.
