Bangkok National Museum

Established by King Rama V and opened in 1874, the Bangkok National Museum primarily introduces Thailand’s history and art. It houses the largest collection of artworks and handicrafts in Thailand, making it the largest museum in Southeast Asia. The museum boasts an exquisite exterior in the architectural style of the Sukhothai Kingdom, with its unique design beautifully complementing the blue sky, and the interior decorations are also extremely refined.

The museum displays important historical relics and classical artworks of Thailand. Among its various collections, Buddhist artifacts make up a significant portion, with an overwhelming variety of Buddha statues from different periods, shapes, and sizes. The collections span from the Stone Age to contemporary dynasties, and its scale is second only to Taipei’s National Palace Museum in Southeast Asia. Highlights include artifacts from the Ban Chiang culture, stucco reliefs from the ancient female musical ensemble of Thonburi, the Avalokiteshvara statue known as the “Thai Venus,” famous stone inscriptions from Sukhothai, ancient weapons, costumes, musical instruments, paintings, ceramics, colorful porcelain, ivory carvings, gold-lacquered cabinets, lacquerware, mother-of-pearl inlaid paintings, royal weapons, royal vehicles and boats, royal household items, as well as various documents, puppets, and shadow play props.

The museum’s corridors also serve as important exhibition spaces, featuring remnants of ancient architecture, wood carvings, stone carvings, and boats, allowing visitors to appreciate them while walking.
