Royal Barge Museum

The royal barges are a magnificent sight in Thailand, as they are exclusively used by the royal family. To preserve these historical relics, Thailand established the Royal Barge Museum to house the barges from past dynasties.

The Royal Barge Museum is located near the Chao Phraya River and is a museum that reflects Thai history and culture. The barges in the museum are elaborately decorated, uniquely designed, and finely crafted. These barges were once used for military purposes but are now reserved solely for royal and official events. The most beautiful and famous barge in the museum is the Suphannahong, which is reserved for the king’s use. In addition, there are several other royal barges. Each barge features ornamental figures at the prow, all derived from Thai mythology—Garuda, Naga, and Narayana. These figures hold significant importance in Thai mythology and are one of a kind, absolutely unique and not found anywhere else in the world.

The best time to admire these magnificent royal barges is during the Royal Barge Procession, a grand Buddhist ceremony held annually between July and October. Visitors can also take a boat directly to the museum. The museum is open daily from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
