Wat Ratchabophit

Wat Ratchabophit is a Buddhist temple located in Bangkok, near the Grand Palace. It was built during the reign of King Rama V. The exterior features traditional Thai architectural style, while the interior is decorated in Western European architectural style.

The layout of Wat Ratchabophit is unique, featuring a prayer hall, an ordination hall, and a circular courtyard connecting the two. In the middle of the courtyard stands a golden stupa in Sri Lankan style, adorned with orange-red tiles on both the top and bottom, creating a magnificent sight. Inside the stupa is enshrined a Buddha relic. The interior of the temple is decorated in Italian style, inspired by King Rama V’s travels in Europe. The main hall’s doors are 3 meters high and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, the walls are covered with Chinese-made tiles, the window frames are adorned with ivory decorations, and the interior is hung with crystal chandeliers, all contributing to its luxurious ambiance. The temple’s drum tower has two stories and is decorated with ceramic Nagas (mythical serpent-like beings).

Wat Ratchabophit is a perfect fusion of Thai and European cultures and can be considered a masterpiece of art among Buddhist temples, making it well worth a visit.
