The popularity of carriages from the 19th to the 20th century greatly facilitated people's travel. In many official ceremonies in Thailand, carriages were frequently used by members of the royal family, and each royal carriage was unique. After cars replaced carriages in 1897, these carriages were well preserved and collected, making the establishment of the Royal Carriage Museum a necessity.

The Royal Carriage Museum opened in 1991 and houses many carriages of Thai royal style, featuring exquisite craftsmanship that is truly breathtaking. It aims to help younger generations learn about history and carriage culture. The museum displays various carriages used during the reigns of Kings Rama V to Rama VIII, each with its own distinctive features. The most prestigious among them is the one-of-a-kind Blue Sapphire Crown Carriage, which was gifted by the Queen of England to King Rama V of Thailand in gratitude. It was hand-carved by Rolls-Royce and specially airlifted here. In addition to the carriages typically used by royalty, the museum also features a gleaming golden hearse used to transport the remains of emperors and royal family members.
