White Island

Yeosu's White Island is located 28 kilometers east of the famous Geoje Island and consists of 39 large and small islets, divided into Upper White Island and Lower White Island. The island features steep cliffs, rugged rocks, and ever-changing scenery, making it one of the most picturesque spots in Yeosu and one of Korea’s Seventh Scenic Heritage Sites. It is said that White Island was named for its overall white appearance, while another theory suggests the name comes from the fact that the islets almost add up to 100—just one short—so “hundred” (百) was reduced by one character to become “white” (白). In reality, it is formed by only 39 rocky islets.

The island’s various oddly-shaped rocks, cliffs formed by years of wave erosion, and countless oval coastlines are truly breathtaking. Moreover, the island is home to over 353 species of plants, including more than 30 types of birds such as black pigeons, as well as tropical plant forests featuring orchids, Dendrobium moniliforme, junipers, wintergreen, and Machilus thunbergii. The average annual seawater temperature is 16.3°C, and the waters are inhabited by over 170 species of marine life, including red coral and flower coral, making the area extremely rich in both plant and animal resources.

Visitors should note that, at present, to protect the natural ecological environment of White Island, landing on the island is prohibited. However, taking a sightseeing boat to admire the beautiful seascape around White Island offers a unique and delightful experience.
