With the opening of Expo 2012 Yeosu just around the corner, this first-ever expo designed to integrate with the sea not only echoes its theme of “The Living Ocean and Coast,” but also features five major innovations within the expo site that are key highlights when visiting. Before you head to the expo, take a moment to explore how Koreans have blended innovative science and technology to create a vision of a marine green economy. 1. The First Expo Theme Pavilion Built on the Sea: This “Theme Pavilion,” constructed over the sea, is an unprecedented innovation in expo history and also the first building in Korea ever built on the ocean. Inside, high-tech visual equipment and performances will showcase the enduring relationship between humans and the ocean, featuring animated films of a dugong and a young boy’s deep-sea adventure that introduce a variety of marine life. The entrance, designed to resemble a clamshell, will change color depending on the number of visitors.

2. The World’s Largest Dome Theater: The Korea Pavilion, powered by a hydrogen battery system, houses the world’s largest dome theater (30m in diameter, 15m in height), where films depict the past, present, and future of Korea’s oceans. The exterior of the Korea Pavilion is designed to represent land, sea, and the symbolic Korean yin-yang image, making visitors feel as though they are part of a traditional Korean circle dance. As a next-generation carbon-neutral building, the messages conveyed during the expo will be preserved and permanently utilized as memorabilia after the event concludes.

3. Korea’s Largest Aquarium:Featuring three exhibition halls, it allows visitors to see endangered rare species such as beluga whales, Baikal seals, and sea dragons, as well as the recreation of the Amazon ecosystem using creatures like arapaima and piranhas. It also includes Korea’s first large-scale dome aquarium tank, offering a 360-degree view of the underwater world of the five oceans.

4. The World’s Largest Organ-Pipe Sculpture: The “Sky Tower,” created by transforming a 55-meter-high abandoned concrete silo on the seashore, combines the shapes of a wave-like harp and an organ pipe. It is not only one of the most eye-catching landmarks at Expo 2012 Yeosu but also the largest sculpture in the shape of an organ pipe in the world. Beautiful melodies are played on-site, conveying the message that with creativity, even old objects can be infused with new life and become unique works of art.

5. First-Ever Mobile Pavilion Booking System:Breaking from previous expos where tickets and information could only be accessed via computers or on-site kiosks, Expo 2012 Yeosu allows visitors to book tickets, reserve pavilions, check transportation and nearby attractions, and more—all via smartphone. Using your ticket number, you can reserve up to two pavilions per day, saving you from long queues. Eight pavilions are available for booking: the Theme Pavilion, Korea Pavilion, Climate & Environment Pavilion, Marine Industry Technology Pavilion, Marine Civilization City Pavilion, Marine Life Pavilion, Aquarium, and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Robot Pavilion.
