Geumwi Island

Geumwi Island consists of three islands—Gudoo, Dongdo, and Seodo—also known as the Three Islands, and is one of the most famous tourist islands in Yeosu, South Korea. Legend has it that at the foot of Suywolsan Mountain on Seodo, 30 meters deep in the sea, lies a massive phallic-shaped rock where a great Confucian scholar was born, hence the rock is called "Munpil Rock." It is also said that during China’s Qing Dynasty, Admiral Ding Ruchang once visited the island and engaged in a written dialogue with the great Confucian scholar Kim Nyu. Impressed by his literary talent, he named the island “Geumwi Island.”

Geumwi Island boasts beautiful scenery and a long history, making it an adventurous island where visitors can revisit Korean history. As soon as visitors disembark from the boat, the landscape they encounter is distinctly different from other islands. Walking along the fortress-like paths deep into the village, one can see many Japanese-style buildings. Moreover, the island still preserves a lighthouse with nearly 100 years of history and a cemetery for British people. Especially notable is the lighthouse, said to be the earliest established on the east coast of Korea. For over a century, it has guided ships passing through its waters, and has become the most iconic structure on Geumwi Island.
