Gwaneumdo Lighthouse

Gwaneumdo Lighthouse is located on Gwaneumdo Island, under the jurisdiction of Yeosu City. Built in 1905, it is the second oldest lighthouse in South Korea and the earliest to be established on the country’s southern coast. Since it was first lit in 1905, the lighthouse has guided ships in the nearby waters consistently for over a century.

The Gwaneumdo Lighthouse has a cylindrical shape and is entirely white, giving it a very romantic appearance. The proudest feature of the lighthouse is its prism lens, which is said to have been manufactured in France and is currently the largest of its kind in the East. The light alternates between red and white every 15 seconds. During heavy fog, the lighthouse keeper also emits foghorn signals to assist vessels in navigating safely. Adjacent to the lighthouse is the staff dormitory, where visitors can peek through the windows to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Gwaneumdo Island — making it a favorite spot among tourists.
