Hwansangam

Hwansangam is located on the edge of Dosan Island under the jurisdiction of Yeosu City, South Korea. It was originally a nunnery called Won tong am built by the Silla monk Wonhyo during the reign of Queen Seondeok. During the Goryeo Dynasty, it was renamed Geum ao am by the monk Yoon Pil, and then in the 41st year of King Sukjong’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty (1715), the monk In Mok saw the red sun rising beautifully on the horizon of the South Sea and renamed it Hwansangam, meaning “Facing the Sun Hermitage,” a name that has been preserved to this day.

Hwansangam was once a base for monks who helped Admiral Yi Sun-sin resist Japanese invaders during the Imjin War. Today, it is one of the most famous sunrise viewing spots in Korea. At the end of each year, people from all over the country flock to Hwansangam, watching the sunrise with hope in their hearts. They make wishes as the sun rises and send them up to the sky, praying for their parents’ health and longevity, for lovers to find love, and for their children to be safe and healthy.

Built on the cliffs along the coast, Hwansangam is surrounded by lush subtropical plants such as camellias growing among rugged rocks and precipices. As such, it is not only a great place to watch the sunrise and sunset but also an ideal spot for enjoying flowers and scenic beauty.
