Jinnamgwan

Jinnamgwan is situated in the heart of Yeosu, South Korea, with direct access via several local bus lines, making it very convenient to reach. It is said that the building was originally constructed in 1599 by Yi Si-yeon, the successor of Yi Sun-sin, on the site where the burnt-down Jinhai Tower once stood. In 1664, Provincial Governor Yi Do-bin undertook several expansions and renovations. Unfortunately, in 1716, during the tenure of Provincial Governor Yu Yeo-ul, the building was destroyed in a fire. It was then rebuilt in 1718 by Li Jei-myoun when he re-established the naval forces, resulting in the current structure of the pavilion. Starting in the 5th year of King Sunjong’s reign (1911), it was used as the campus of Yeosu Public Normal School, and during the Japanese occupation, it also served as the site for Yeosu Middle School and the Yeosu Night Commercial School.

Jinnamgwan is highly praised for having retained its historical integrity and the appearance it had when reconstructed by Li Jei-myoun for the Jeolla Left Naval Forces. Majestic and ancient in character, the grand structure covers a total floor area of 240 pyeong, including a 15-bay front and a 5-bay side, making it the largest surviving local government office building. In 1959, it was designated as a Treasure, and later, recognizing its importance, it was further designated as National Treasure No. 304 in 2001. Its outstanding artistic value is well worth exploring for every visitor.
