Located on the Yeosu Peninsula of South Korea, Gyeryongsan Mountain is a stunning mountain range famed for its sea of azalea blossoms that erupt in vibrant color every April. The azalea is the national flower of the Republic of Korea, also referred to as rhododendron simsii, flame azalea, or Korean rhododendron, and typically thrives on hillsides, grassy areas, and shrubs. It is the first flower to bloom in the wild, heralding the arrival of spring. Its floral meaning represents enduring blossoms, and Koreans use it as a symbol of lasting prosperity, joy, and happiness.

The sea of azaleas on Gyeryongsan Mountain is celebrated worldwide. By early April each year, the mountainside transforms into a sweeping pink ocean of blooms, particularly from the mid-slopes to the summit, where flowers completely cover the terrain, resembling a blazing wildfire across the peaks—creating a truly majestic spectacle. Hiking up Gyeryongsan, blanketed in pink blossoms, feels like stepping onto a path that doesn’t quite belong to this world. Today, an annual Azalea Festival is held during the first full week of April when the flowers are at their peak. Originally a mountain spirit ritual to pray for national peace and citizens’ wellbeing, the festival has expanded to include a photography contest, Miss Azalea pageant, local cultural performances, Righteous Way Farmers' Music Rituals, farmers’ music competitions, poetry and painting exhibitions, and pressed-flower craft workshops. These activities attract visitors from around the globe.
