Lee Jung-seop Art Museum

The Lee Jung-seop Art Museum is located on Lee Jung-seop Road in Seogwipo, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea. It was established to honor the renowned Korean painter Lee Jung-seop. The museum currently houses six original works by Lee Jung-seop and 52 pieces by other modern and contemporary Korean artists. Although the collection is small, it is still worth visitors taking a moment to appreciate.

1951 was one of the most intense years of the Korean War. That year, Lee Jung-seop lived in Seogwipo with his wife and son, during which he created most of his representative works. Although he stayed there temporarily as a war refugee, this period in Seogwipo was the most stable time in Lee Jung-seop’s turbulent life. He also produced many outstanding works during this time. Because of its significance, the city of Seogwipo acquired the house where he lived, restored it to its original condition, and designated it as the Lee Jung-seop Memorial Hall. The path in front of the house, which he walked on daily during his morning and evening strolls, was named “Lee Jung-seop Road.” Walking along Lee Jung-seop Road, visitors can see the house where he stayed during his refuge, and behind it is the “Lee Jung-seop Art Museum” that displays works from his lifetime. Though small, it has a unique charm.
