Three Major Waterfalls on Jeju Island Legendary Attractions Like a Fairyland

Jeju Island is one of South Korea's popular tourist destinations. It is a volcanic island formed by volcanic activity, and was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2007 due to its abundance of unique volcanic formations such as basalt, black volcanic rocks, and lava caves. In addition to these spectacular volcanic landscapes, the waterfalls of Jeju are also well worth visiting. Below are the three major waterfall attractions on Jeju Island. Each waterfall is surrounded by towering rocky formations that seem to reach the sky, creating a majestic feeling of cascading from above. Not only can you enjoy these natural wonders, but they are also perfect spots for cooling off in the summer.

Cheonjiyeon Falls
 
Cheonjiyeon Falls is the largest waterfall on Jeju Island. The rock formation above the falls resembles the outline of a human face, which has sparked much discussion. The valley here features a U-shaped gorge formed by subsidence, uplift, and lava faults, along with rich vegetation.

Standing 22 meters high and 12 meters wide, there is an Old Stone Age (around 25,000 BC) site on the eastern side of the canyon. Legend has it that a divine dragon lives in the pool, and whenever there is a drought, holding a rain prayer ceremony here will immediately summon the dragon’s presence.

Jeongbang Falls
 
Jeongbang Falls is 23 meters high and up to 8 meters wide, and is the only waterfall in Asia that directly flows into the ocean. Here you can admire two waterfalls rushing down steep cliffs, as well as enjoy the beautiful ocean view. The surrounding cliffs and ancient pine trees have long made this place known as “Jeongbang Summer Waterfall,” and it has been selected as one of the top ten scenic views of Yeongju.

Legend has it that during the Qin Shi Huang era, a man named Xu Fu traveled a great distance to seek the elixir of immortality, but did not find it. On his way back, he became so captivated by the beauty of Jeongbang Falls that he forgot himself, and even carved the words “Xu Does Not Pass This” on the cliff.
