Mt. Sangbangsan is located near 16, Sache-ri, Ande-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea. It is a bell-shaped volcanic dome resembling a volcano. “Sangbang” means a cave in the mountain, and it is said that the mountain got its name because of a sea erosion cave located at an altitude of about 150 meters on the southern side of Mt. Sangbangsan. Because the mountain has a high elevation and is close to the sea, its summit is often shrouded in clouds, making it difficult to see the surrounding ocean views. Moreover, unusual weather phenomena can be observed at the foothills, giving this volcano even more unique characteristics.

Mt. Sangbangsan is a trachyte lava dome formed along the coastal contact zone with the Yongdung volcaniclastic sediments at Sache-ri Beach in Ande-myeon. Standing in the plains of the southwestern part of Jeju Island, its bell-shaped volcanic body can be admired from various angles, and its beautiful shape has captivated many visitors. In addition, Mt. Sangbangsan boasts abundant plant resources and is an important plant conservation area in South Korea. The summit is covered with dense evergreen broadleaf forests, including trees such as Japanese cypress, pine, chestnut, and crowberry. The rocky cliffs also nurture a variety of rare plants, some of which have even been designated as natural monument cultural assets.
