Marado Island

Marado Island is a small island located at the southern tip of South Korea, about 11 kilometers south of Moseup Harbor in Dajeong-myeon, Seogwipo City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. It covers an area of 0.3 square kilometers and is shaped like a sweet potato. The coastline of Marado Island stretches 4.2 kilometers, and its highest point is 39 meters above sea level. The islanders are mainly engaged in fishing and also earn income by offering homestays to large numbers of tourists.

No groundwater can be found on Marado Island, so residents have to collect rainwater for daily use. The island uses solar power for electricity. In 1883, three families first settled on the island, initially surviving on seafood. Later, as food became scarce, they began farming and cleared dense forests by burning them. It is said that the fire killed all the snakes and frogs on the island, which is why no snakes or frogs can be found there to this day. Marado Island is a famous spot for sea fishing, and it is common to see many fishing enthusiasts here, especially during holidays. In addition, the island’s charming scenery is a major draw for visitors.
