Tsuwano Town

Tsuwano Town is located in a basin within the Chugoku Mountains at the southwestern tip of Shimane Prefecture in the Chugoku region of Japan. Since ancient times, it has been known as the “Little Kyoto of San’in.” With a long history, the town flourished after the construction of a mountain castle by Kikkawa Motoharu during the Kamakura period, leaving behind numerous historical sites and becoming one of Shimane Prefecture’s most renowned tourist towns.

The entire town of Tsuwano exudes a sense of history. Along the main streets, white walls of old residences stand tall, symbolizing Tsuwano’s heritage. Colorful koi fish swim freely in the canals by the roadsides, adding vitality to the tranquil and historic town. A large number of attractions, including Taikodani Inari Shrine, Tsuwano Castle Ruins, Eihei-ji Temple, Washihara Hachiman Shrine, Tsuwano Town Local History Museum, Tsuwano Town Folklore Museum, and Horitei Garden, welcome thousands of visitors from around the world every day. Moreover, the town has been home to many notable figures, such as the literary master Mori Ogai. Nearby are historic sites related to these personalities, including the Pensioner’s Hall (Yoroikan), a domain school that educated Mori Ogai, and the ruins of the district office. There is also Tsuwano Catholic Church, which commemorates the martyred souls of local Catholics, and many unique art museums, giving the area a rich artistic atmosphere.
