Lake Shinji

Lake Shinji is a lake that spans the cities of Matsue, Izumo, and the town of Fuefuki in the Shimane Prefecture of the Chugoku region of Japan. It is 17 kilometers wide from east to west, 6 kilometers long from north to south, and has a circumference of 47 kilometers, making it the seventh largest lake in Japan. This lake is a brackish water lake, also known as a semi-saline lake, which refers to water bodies with a salt concentration between that of freshwater and seawater, commonly found where rivers meet the sea. Fish living in brackish water have a strong ability to adapt to osmotic pressure, allowing them to tolerate fluctuations in salinity caused by tides and even survive for a period of time in either pure freshwater or pure seawater.

Lake Shinji is rich in fish and shellfish, especially clams, whitebait, eels, shishamo, carp, perch, and shrimp — collectively known as the “Seven Treasures of Lake Shinji” — which are recognized as some of the most iconic delicacies in Matsue. In addition, Lake Shinji has long been famous for its beautiful sunsets, with landmarks such as the Lake Shinji Bridge, Matsue Bridge, and Yome no Shima enhancing the view. Visitors can enjoy spectacular sunsets from parks along the eastern lakeshore, including Hakutei Park, Sodeguchi Park, and the Shimane Art Museum.

Near the mouth of the Hii River on the western shore of Lake Shinji lies Lake Shinji Green Park, which is also well-known as a wintering site for wild birds such as bean geese and tundra swans. The park features an observation hut and viewing pools, allowing visitors to easily enjoy birdwatching.
