Ryuzu Falls

Ryuzu Falls is a waterfall located within Nikkō National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, in Japan’s Kantō region. It was formed when lava from the eruption of Mount Nantai blocked the flow of the Yu River, creating Lake Chūzenji, which then began leaking at the bottom and cascading down the valley. Alongside Kegon Falls in Ibaraki Prefecture and Nachi Falls in Wakayama Prefecture, it is known as one of Japan's three most magnificent waterfalls, and has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty since 1931.

Water from Lake Chūzenji plunges over 97 meters down a massive cliff face at a rate of three tons per second, forming the majestic Ryuzu Falls. The falls blend seamlessly with the surrounding stunning natural landscape, leaving visitors in awe. Moreover, visitors can take an elevator directly to the waterfall viewing platform to get an up-close look at the spectacular waterfall and the ever-changing seasonal scenery around it. Listening to the roar of the falls, watching the massive curtain of water and the misty spray, everyone can’t help but marvel at the awe-inspiring power of nature.

Ryuzu Falls is picturesque all year round, but it is especially breathtaking during the autumn foliage season and when massive icicles form in winter. A pioneer of China’s cultural enlightenment movement once visited Ryuzu Falls and left behind the famous line: “Soaring like a dragon from heaven, hanging upside down above exquisite stone.”
