Kawaji Onsen
Kawaji Onsen refers to a hot spring resort located where the Kinugawa River flows upstream from Nikkō City in Tochigi Prefecture, eastern part of Japan’s Kanto region, near its confluence with the Manago River. Legend has it that during the Edo period, after heavy rains caused a flood that eventually receded, springs gushing from the riverbed were discovered — this marked the beginning of Kawaji Onsen.
Kawaji Onsen still retains the tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of a classic hot spring retreat. Visitors can enjoy the serene mountain valley setting, take in the seasonal beauty of the stream, and soak in extremely comfortable hot springs that provide complete relaxation for tired minds and bodies. The waters of Kawaji Onsen are known to be beneficial for conditions such as neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis, joint stiffness, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive disorders, hemorrhoids, and cold sensitivity. It is especially helpful during recovery from injuries or illness, which is why there has long been a local saying: “For external injuries, go to Kawaji; for burns, go to Taki (now Kegon Onsen).” In recent years, about ten inns and hotels have been built along the banks of the Manago River in the hot spring area, greatly enhancing convenience for travelers’ accommodation and dining needs.
