Kinugawa Onsen
Kinugawa Onsen originated in the Edo period and initially referred to a waterfall hot spring discovered on the western side of the Kinugawa River. Later, another hot spring, the Fujiwara Onsen, was found continuously gushing out on the eastern side of the river. Before long, these two hot springs were combined under the unified name of Kinugawa Onsen, becoming one of the most renowned hot spring resorts in Japan’s Kanto region.
Currently, over 80 hotels and ryokans have been established along the Kinugawa River. Most offer open-air hot springs with views of the valley, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxing soak in the serene and lush mountain surroundings. Kinugawa Onsen is known for its specific skin-beautifying effects, making it especially popular among beauty-conscious guests. It is also believed to have therapeutic benefits for various conditions including neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, frozen shoulder, sports paralysis, joint stiffness, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive disorders, hemorrhoids, and cold sensitivity. It is particularly famed for its effectiveness in treating burns, earning it the traditional reputation of “for burns, soak in Kinugawa.”
The Kinugawa Onsen area offers a wide range of recreational activities throughout the year. In spring and summer, water sports provide excitement, while autumn brings vibrant foliage viewing, and winter is ideal for skiing. Visitors can enjoy both the therapeutic benefits of the hot springs and the fun of exploring a premier resort destination.
