Nikko is located in the northern part of the Kanto region of Japan and the northwestern part of Tochigi Prefecture. It is an international cultural tourism city that encompasses natural landscapes such as mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. The beautiful natural scenery and ancient historical sites together create the city’s boundless charm, attracting around 6 million domestic and international visitors every year.

The buildings within Nikko's mountain area and the surrounding forested regions have been collectively designated as a World Cultural Heritage site due to their harmonious integration with nature. The “Shrines and Temples of Nikko,” located within Nikko National Park, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The Nikko Cedar Avenue, also part of Nikko National Park, has been designated as a Special Natural Monument and is well worth a visit — you definitely won’t be disappointed. Other historic sites include the Tamozawa Imperial Villa Site, the Nikko Kanaya Hotel, Oze Plateau, and Kodokugo Ranch.

The city’s stunning natural scenery consists of cascading waterfalls, tranquil and elegant lakes, and majestic mountains. Among them, Lake Chuzenji is a representative alpine lake in Japan and the largest lake in Nikko National Park, formed by lava flows from Mount Nantai, with crystal-clear waters. Kegon Falls is known as one of Japan’s three most beautiful waterfalls and was designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1931. In 2007, it was also listed among Japan’s Top 100 Geological Sites. Other attractions include Mount Nantai, Saimyo Falls, Jakko Falls, Ryuzu Falls, Kegon Falls, Kinugawa Onsen, Kawaji Onsen, and Kuroneko Onsen.
