Utsunomiya City is located in the northern part of the Kanto region of Japan, in the central area of Tochigi Prefecture. It serves as the prefectural capital of Tochigi and is the only core city in North Kanto. The city boasts exceptional natural conditions and is home to many cutting-edge enterprises, earning it a reputation as one of Japan’s foremost emerging tech cities.

Utsunomiya City has a long history and rich culture, with numerous historical sites throughout the city. Venturing into the suburbs allows visitors to enjoy pleasant natural surroundings. Although many historical buildings were destroyed during the Boshin War and World War II, cultural heritage sites such as Utsunomiya Castle, Matsuhō Church, and Seiganji Iron Pagoda have been preserved. Among them, the former site park of Utsunomiya Castle has been designated as one of Japan’s 100 Great Historical Parks. Heading out of the city and into the suburbs offers access to abundant nature. The eastern part is watered by the Kinugawa River of the Nagara River system, nourishing fertile lands, while the western part is dominated by Mount Gokase, the highest peak in Utsunomiya. There are also many great leisure spots perfect for holidays. Outdoor activities in Utsunomiya are diverse — at campsites, you can barbecue, go hiking, or cycling. In addition, there are dedicated golf courses, swimming pools, ice-skating rinks, bowling alleys, saunas, and bathing facilities.

Utsunomiya City is the top consumer of gyōza (dumplings) in all of Japan and is nationally renowned for them, making gyōza the city’s representative dish. There is a famous gyōza statue in front of Utsunomiya Station. The city is packed with both long-established gyōza shops and new ones, and its status as the number one consumer of gyōza has earned it the well-deserved title of “Gyōza City.”
