Ashikaga City

Ashikaga City is a city in the southwestern part of Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, located about 70 kilometers from central Tokyo. Once widely known as a city with a highly developed textile industry, Ashikaga has in recent years evolved into a comprehensive commercial and industrial city centered on aluminum products, plastic products, and machinery industries.

The Ashikaga Clan Residence is the head temple of the Dainichi sect of Shingon Buddhism in Ashikaga City, established in 1196, and designated as a National Historic Site under the name “Ashikaga Clan Residence Site (Banna-ji Temple).” The Ashikaga City Art Museum, opened in 1994, is a very rare art museum in Japan, primarily featuring art exhibitions. Its diverse and colorful exhibitions are highly appealing to art enthusiasts. The Kurita Museum, opened in 1975, mainly collects and displays ceramics and is the first museum in Japan to exhibit pottery and porcelain. It is also the only art museum that showcases Imari porcelain and Nabeshima ware. In addition, the Sōun Art Museum, Orihime Shrine, Kadoya Inari Shrine, and Namago Stone Group are also not to be missed.
