Beitou Hot Spring Valley

Beitou Hot Spring Valley is an outlet for sulfur gas and hot springs, located in a valley basin along Zhongshan Road in Beitou District, Taipei City. Due to the constant steam and intense heat, it evokes images of a terrifying hell. In earlier years, there were also incidents of tourists accidentally falling into the high-temperature spring water and being scalded to death, earning it the alternative name "Hell Valley." However, when the morning sunlight shines on the steam rising from the hot springs, it creates a dazzling display of ever-changing light and shadows, resembling a dreamlike fairyland. As a result, during the Japanese colonial period, Beitou Hot Spring Valley was once ranked as one of Taiwan’s Eight Scenic Spots and Twelve Beautiful Views, celebrated as the "Jade Mist of Sulfur Springs."

The spring water in Beitou Hot Spring Valley is acidic sulfur water with a temperature as high as 90 degrees Celsius. The water is clear and has a slightly green, jade-like hue, commonly referred to as "green sulfur." With a pH level between 1.4 and 1.6, the water is highly corrosive, making prolonged soaking inadvisable. Despite this, the hot springs of Beitou Hot Spring Valley remain one of the sources of the Beitou hot spring area, as the water contains trace amounts of the radioactive element radium, which offers health benefits. Currently, the relevant authorities have renovated the landscape of Beitou Hot Spring Valley, channeling the spring flow to form a lake. The area is surrounded by pathways and railings, with observation pavilions along the walkways. Nearby, there are also handcrafted water channels made of stones and cement where visitors can soak their feet in the hot springs for free. The Taipei City Government has also designated the Xinbeitou Park along with Beitou Hot Spring Valley as the "Beitou Hot Spring Water Park."
