Beitou District, with its rich hot spring resources and one of the world’s 25 most beautiful public libraries, will hold the “2nd Taiwan Beitou Gourmet Restaurant Food Festival” from the 8th to the 10th of this month. The event fuses the nostalgic retro elements of “gourmet restaurant dishes” and “nagashi (nostalgic live music),” featuring food stalls along the south side of the Xinbeitou MRT Station. A festival guidebook will also be launched, containing discount vouchers from multiple hotels and lodges—with savings of up to 50% off regular prices. The guide can be picked up free of charge at 12 tourist information centers across Taipei. Additionally, from now until June 7th, customers who spend NT$2,000 or more at participating establishments will receive a limited-edition yukata and a gourmet banquet set meal.

The upcoming “2012 Taiwan Beitou Gourmet Restaurant Food Festival” will take place from June 8th to 10th, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with on-site gourmet restaurant food stalls along the south side of the Xinbeitou MRT Station. Nagashi performances will be held every evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM during the event period, allowing visitors to request songs and enjoy live performances. The festival will also distribute a guidebook featuring not only details about the event and attractions but also discount vouchers from over 10 hotels and lodges in the Beitou area, with savings of up to 50% off. These guides are available free of charge at 12 tourist information centers in Taipei, Beitou Meiting, Beitou Hot Spring Museum, Ketagalan Cultural Park, Beitou Civic Center, Beitou Branch of Taipei Public Library, and Xinbeitou. Some coupons are valid from June 8th to September 30th. Furthermore, from now until June 7th, customers who spend NT$2,000 or more at participating restaurants can exchange their receipts for a yukata and a gourmet banquet set meal at the event’s main service desk on June 8th starting at 11:00 AM, limited to 100 participants.

During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese were enamored with Beitou’s hot springs and built numerous hotels and lodges in the area. The gourmet restaurant dishes served there were characterized by elaborate knife skills, exquisite plating, and premium ingredients—once reserved solely for the elite, hence earning the nickname “official cuisine.” Nagashi, on the other hand, originated as a form of itinerant musical performance from Japan and was immensely popular in Beitou, making the district the birthplace of Taiwan’s nagashi culture. This event blends the traditional cultural elements of gourmet dishes and nostalgic live music, integrating diverse culinary styles such as Taiwanese, Sichuanese, and Cantonese. It has also transformed the previously heavy, oily, and salty flavors into lighter dishes with reduced oil, salt, and sugar to cater to modern health-conscious preferences.
