New Beitou Hot Spring Area Keeps Prices Steady This Winter

Soaking in hot springs in winter is the best way to beat the cold. However, the measure halving the hot spring extraction fee rate will expire at the end of this year. Starting next year, the fee will revert from the current NT$4.5 per cubic meter to NT$9, signaling a potential price hike for hot springs. According to the "Hot Spring Extraction Fee Rate and Usage Measures" by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, Water Resources Agency, starting January 1, 2006, anyone extracting hot springs for personal or others’ use must pay an extraction fee of NT$9 per cubic meter. To mitigate the impact at the time, the fee was halved until the end of this year, but it has recently been announced that the full rate will be reinstated starting January 1 next year. Nevertheless, 20 hot spring businesses in Taipei’s Beitou district have announced a no-price-hike declaration just as cold fronts are about to hit, allowing the public to enjoy warm soaks without worrying about their wallets.
