【Thursday Art & Culture】Kaohsiung Container Art Festival Features "Liveable" Container Spaces

This year's "2013 Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival – Liveable", seeks to re-examine the nature of containers and possible future trends in human society, proposing an alternative direction for container art development — "liveable" container spaces. Multiple domestic and international architect and spatial designer teams were invited to propose and construct prototype liveable container spaces, putting into practice the concept of "life design & container architecture". These are exhibited at the Pier-2 Art Center, transforming containers into interfaces that link creative design with living spaces. Participating teams include Fei-Xun International Co., Ltd.: Zhang Jiaxuan; Jiang Lejing Architects: Jiang Lejing; Chen Zihao, Huang Yiqing Architects: Huang Yiqing; Lin Zhifeng Architects: Lin Zhifeng, Wang Qizhen; Kuang Ri Cai Pei Design Workshop; Han Tang Ju; ARKHE-N-SPACES Architects: Eric Cassar; Sou Fujimoto Architects: Sou Fujimoto; and Mecanoo Architecten: Francine Houben + Freek Wiedijk.

 

Hsieh Pei-ni, Director of the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, stated that the Container Art Festival is a crucial project for the museum. Containers themselves are not only tools for goods transport. The greatest hope of this Container Art Festival is to move beyond pure artistry and become closer to daily life. Each container this time holds an architectural use permit, just as the theme of the event suggests — they are truly "liveable". The participating architects are all top-tier professionals. In addition to internationally renowned architecture teams, collaborations also include architects from southern Taiwan. Each work transcends mere aesthetic appeal and is highly practical. It is hoped that through this Container Art Festival, people will once again be reminded of the pursuit of housing justice, self-renewal, and urban regeneration.

 

Cultural Affairs Bureau Director Shih Che said this Container Art Festival is the exhibition closest to the sea. For Kaohsiung, a port city, containers and the harbor are its defining features. Hosting the exhibition by the sea returns the containers to where they belong. The success of this year’s Container Art Festival is no longer just about container design, but also serves as a significant statement for Pier-2, the nation’s largest art experimental zone.
