Who’s sitting inside the giant pineapple in the deep mountains? A must-visit pineapple pavilion in Beitou for SpongeBob fans

SpongeBob SquarePants, beloved by children, lives in a huge and adorable pineapple house. But the “giant pineapple house in the deep sea” doesn’t only appear in the SpongeBob cartoon — visitors to Beitou District can also see a golden-yellow pineapple pavilion in person.

In addition to being a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, the cherry blossom tunnel on Fuxing 3rd Road in Beitou District, Taipei City, was once also home to a unique cluster of pineapple-themed houses. Therefore, the Department of Urban Development’s Geotechnical Engineering Office built a “pineapple landscape pavilion” along the Yongchunliao Stream near the former pineapple house community while carrying out revetment repairs, offering citizens a new photo spot and a place to check in. From here, you can also enjoy a distant view of the Guandu Plain.

The pineapple pavilion fully showcases the fruit’s golden-yellow peel and flesh, with green leaves visible on top, making it particularly eye-catching in the lush green surroundings. Huang Liyuan, head of the Geotechnical Engineering Office, said, “The ‘Pineapple Houses’ were famous during the Qing Dynasty for their pineapple production and residential buildings. After years of restoration, the Yongchunliao Stream next to the community has regained its natural ecology. As part of the revetment improvement project, we’ve added new water-friendly steps, as well as a leisure plaza and the pineapple pavilion, providing citizens with a new recreational destination. We welcome everyone to come and experience it.”
