Zhuzihu

Zhuzihu is a valley nestled between Datun Mountain and Qixing Mountain in northern Taiwan, located within the Yangmingshan National Park area. The region sits at an altitude of about 670 meters, featuring a cool and rainy climate. Thanks to its fertile soil and abundant, clean mountain spring water, it has become a rare leisure agriculture zone in the Yangmingshan area. It is said that Zhuzihu was originally a natural barrier lake formed after a volcanic eruption. Over time, the lake receded, and the area was once covered with extensive stands of arrow bamboo and moso bamboo. When the wind blew, the bamboos swayed like waves on a lake, which gave the place its name.

Since 1969 (the 58th year of the Republic of China), the Zhuzihu area began introducing white calla lilies from Japan and gradually became one of Taiwan’s primary regions for cultivating calla lilies. The planted area covers approximately 13 hectares, and various colors of calla lily varieties have been developed. The calla lily blooming season lasts from December to May of the following year, with peak production occurring between March and May. Nowadays, the annual Zhuzihu Calla Lily Festival, held every March or April, has become one of the highlights of Yangmingshan National Park, attracting visitors from around the world to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of vast calla lily fields. Moreover, the romantic and picturesque calla lily fields have also become a top choice for many young couples to take wedding photos and celebrate their love, often seen as the backdrop for numerous newlyweds.
