Yangming Study

Yangming Study, also known as the "Zhongxing Guesthouse," is a renowned scenic spot and historical site located within Yangmingshan National Park in Taipei. It was named after the great Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Yangming due to Chiang Kai-shek’s personal admiration for him. It served as Chiang Kai-shek’s private residence and one of the living quarters for both Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling. Chiang Kai-shek once hosted numerous foreign dignitaries and key Taiwanese political and economic figures here, and he often used it as a summer retreat. As such, it has been dubbed “Chiang Kai-shek’s last residence.”

Covering a total area of about 1,200 pyeong, Yangming Study is a two-story Chinese garden-style building, featuring long corridors on both the first and second floors as well as in the backyard. Situated on Yangmingshan, it is surrounded by peaks such as Shamao Mountain, Datun Mountain, and Qixing Mountain. Guests can enjoy panoramic views of Guanyin Mountain, Linkou Plateau, and even the scenic beauty of the Tamsui River and Keelung River from the balcony on the second floor. Additionally, the large flower clock near the study is a landmark of Yangmingshan and attracts large crowds of visitors during the Yangmingshan Flower Festival when the area is in full bloom.

Wang Shouren (1472–1529), a Chinese philosopher of the Ming Dynasty and a master synthesizer of the School of Mind (Xinxue), also known as idealist philosophy. His courtesy name was Boyan and his pseudonym was Yangming. A native of Yuyao, Zhejiang, he was a renowned thinker, writer, philosopher, and military strategist of the Ming Dynasty, and the foremost proponent of the Lu-Wang School of Mind. He had deep knowledge of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Wang Shouren is grouped with Confucius, Mencius, and Zhu Xi as part of the “Four Sages”: Confucius, Mencius, Zhu Xi, and Wang. His philosophical doctrine, known as Wangxue or Yangmingism, was the most influential school of thought during the Ming Dynasty.
