Qijiawan Stream

Qijiawan Stream is located in the Wuling area of Heping District, Taichung City, within the jurisdiction of Shei-Pa National Park. Its source is Taoshan, one of the Four Beauties of Wuling. It is a major tributary of the upper Dajia River, stretching approximately 15.3 kilometers in length with a drainage area of about 5,603 hectares. The stream’s water flow is significantly influenced by rainfall during the summer rainy season, resulting in distinct seasonal variations with low water levels in winter and high levels in summer.

Due to its climate, hydrology, and valley topography, Qijiawan Stream features a diverse range of habitats including shallow riffles, rapids, slow-flowing sections, deep pools, and stepped waterfalls. These formations not only create numerous well-known scenic spots but also provide an ideal living environment for various aquatic species. It is the only habitat for the glacial relict species, the Formosan landlocked salmon, and currently supports the largest remaining population of this fish in Taiwan. As a result, it is often referred to as the “Hometown of the Formosan Landlocked Salmon.” Designated as a national first-class protected fish conservation area, it holds significant importance in biogeography. On October 1, 1997, the “Qijiawan Stream Formosan Landlocked Salmon Wildlife Refuge” was officially established. Thanks to years of conservation and restoration efforts, Qijiawan Stream has gained widespread recognition.
