Recognizing that the mobile social messaging app WeChat has over 100 million users worldwide, the Taichung City Government announced on the 28th the official launch of its WeChat account “i游台中” (WeChat ID: itaichung). Leveraging WeChat’s unique LBS (Location-Based Service), the account calls on travel enthusiasts to stay connected and keep up with the latest tourism updates in Taichung.
Mayor Hu stated that some have said, “Promotion not online is not promotion, and information not on mobile is not information.” Most people today own smartphones, and compared to getting news from traditional paper flyers or newspapers, young people now prefer using smartphones or the internet to gather information. With Taiwan gradually opening up to tourists from mainland China, the number of mainland visitors traveling to Taichung has also increased significantly. At the same time, WeChat has surpassed 300 million global registered users. That’s why the idea of collaborating with WeChat emerged early on. Eventually, Tan Lewen, General Manager of Tencent International Business Group’s Taiwan and Hong Kong Office, sent a letter expressing the hope that Taichung City could provide tourism information and partner with WeChat.

At the press conference for the launch of the WeChat “i游台中” official account, Shi Jingwen, Director of the Taichung City Government Information Bureau, immediately conducted an on-site test. In addition to having a homepage, the account allows users to input any address and receive nearby restaurant, hotel, and accommodation information no matter where they are. All tourism information has been rigorously reviewed by the Taichung City Tourism Bureau, ensuring the best guidance for visitors from around the world.
In addition to sending out irregular updates on the latest tourism-related information, to encourage more public attention and usage, the Taichung City Tourism Bureau will hold a lucky draw from September to December. At the end of each month, 10 lucky followers of the “i游台中” WeChat account will be selected as winners, with prizes including accommodation vouchers at high-end hotels and hot spring resorts in the Taichung area.
