Zhongzheng District Chenghuang Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Zhongzheng District Chenghuang Temple is located in Chenghuang Li, South District, Taichung City, near Zhongxiao Night Market. It was first established in the 15th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1889), serving as the Chenghuang Temple of Taiwan Provincial City (which later moved its provincial capital to Taipei and became solely known as Taiwan Prefecture City). It was originally located in Leyi Li, East District, Taichung City (now the site of the former Taichung Sugar Factory). In the early years of Japanese rule, the temple was occupied by the Japanese military and used as a barracks, and was later converted into a sugar factory. It was not until 1919 that local residents built a temporary shrine near Lianwu Jiao at the light railway station in East District. In 1921, the temple was relocated to its current site.

The Chenghuang (City God) enshrined at Taichung Chenghuang Temple is regarded as the local deity governing the former Taichung City under the provincial administration. Due to the strong and sincere faith of the local people, the temple remains highly popular to this day, and the 15th day of the sixth lunar month is celebrated as the Chenghuang’s festival day — a major local religious event. The temple holds grand birthday celebration ceremonies on this occasion. Starting from the beginning of the sixth lunar month, large numbers of worshippers flock to the temple from all over. In addition to the festival rituals, various folk activities such as operatic performances are also held. As a result, the temple’s front stage comes alive with the sounds of drums and gongs as thanksgiving performances are presented, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
