921 Earthquake Education Park

On September 21, 1999, at 1:47 a.m., a powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck central Taiwan, causing one of the most devastating earthquakes in terms of casualties and property damage in Taiwan in nearly a century. To remind the public of the importance of earthquake awareness and disaster relief measures, the government and scholars selected a site related to the earthquake to build an earthquake museum, which was officially named the “921 Earthquake Education Park” on February 13, 2001, to highlight its commemorative and educational significance.

The 921 Earthquake Education Park is located on the earthquake ruins in Guangfu New Village, Wufeng District, Taichung City, built along the fault line. It artistically combines distinctive architecture with earthquake ruins, providing an on-site venue for earthquake education for the general public and school students, making it a living textbook for earthquake prevention and disaster reduction. The park consists of five major thematic areas: the Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park, Earthquake Engineering Education Hall, Image Gallery, Disaster Prevention Education Hall, and Reconstruction Record Hall. All sections were opened to the public on September 21, 2004. Among them, the Image Gallery features a collection of photos and video materials related to the 921 Earthquake, showcasing major themes such as “Taiwan Shaken,” “Returning to 921,” “Human Warmth,” “Causes and Consequences of the Earthquake,” and “Reconstruction and Renewal,” making it one of the most popular exhibition halls.
