Eight Immortals Mountain in Taiwan

Eight Immortals Mountain is located at the border between Heping District in Taichung City and Ren'ai Township in Nantou County, Taiwan. It is a southwestern branch of the Baigu Mountain Range within the Snow Mountains. The main peak stands at an elevation of 2,424 meters, which converts to approximately 8,000 Taiwanese feet—hence the name “Eight Immortals Mountain.” It is recognized as one of Taiwan’s Little Hundred Peaks and serves as the watershed between the Dajia River and the Wu River, with a Second-Class Triangulation Station No. 1547 erected on it.

During the Japanese colonial period, Eight Immortals Mountain was initially planned to be named “Eight Thousand Mountain,” but the more elegant name “Eight Immortals Mountain” was eventually adopted. Visitors who hike to higher elevations can enjoy panoramic views of famous sights such as the Central Cross-Island Highway, the Central Mountain Range, Puli, and Sun Moon Lake. The forest resources in and around Eight Immortals Mountain are abundant. In the past, it was known as the Eight Immortals Mountain Forest Farm—one of Taiwan’s three major forest farms—but logging has ceased in recent years. The northern foothills area, Jiabaotai, was once selected as one of Taiwan’s Eight Scenic Spots during the Japanese era. After the transformation of the forest management unit, this region has been developed into the Eight Immortals Mountain Forest Recreation Area. Not only does it boast rich natural scenery, but it also features cultural attractions such as the ruins of a Shinto shrine, Jinghai Temple, the Taiwan Eight Scenic Spots Monument, the remains of an elementary school, and the Thousand Pine Plains, all of which are highly appealing.
