Zhaixing Manor

Zhaixing Manor is located in Tanzi Township, Taichung County. Recognized as a county-level historical site, it spans over 2,500 pyeong (approximately 8,200 square meters) and boasts a history of 130 years. Once hailed as the foremost among Taiwan’s top ten traditional residences, the manor showcases the exquisite beauty of Chinese residential craftsmanship through its vibrant paintings, clay sculptures, wood carvings, and koji ceramics.

Zhaixing Manor is an earthen-walled structure that took six years to build. It features a three-courtyard quadrangle layout with multiple wing rooms. "Carving, calligraphy, and painting can be found everywhere" is the manor’s most distinctive feature. Common wall decorations include colored pottery, stone carvings, and relief calligraphy and paintings, with the most intricate designs adorning the main hall’s entrance gate. The main hall employs a "concave gate" design, subtly signifying the family’s social status. The plaque inscribed with “Wen Kui” (literary excellence), bestowed by the imperial court during the Tongzhi era, hangs above the gate. Upon entering, the upper half of the wall from the central line is completely covered with dazzling and colorful koji ceramics, creating a breathtaking visual effect. Other walls also feature various decorative elements such as elegant bamboo lattice windows and vividly expressive koji ceramic gable ornaments, all proudly displaying the wealth and status of the original owners.

Over time, the artistic details on the walls have faded due to natural erosion and intentional or accidental human damage, leaving them incomplete — a truly lamentable sight.

Transportation Guide

1. Take a Fengyuan Bus from in front of Taichung Railway Station or from Fengyuan, and get off at the Tanzi Industrial Park, then walk to the manor.

2. Take a Fengyuan Bus bound for Daya via Xintian from Fengyuan, and get off at the Tanzi Industrial Park.

Special Note: Zhaixing Manor remains a private residence, currently inhabited by descendants of the Lin family. Visitors must obtain the homeowners’ permission before entering and should keep disturbances to a minimum.
