Introduction

Taroko National Park spans Hualien, Nantou, and Taichung. Established in 1986, it is the second-largest national park in Taiwan. The park is renowned for its majestic and nearly vertical marble canyon landscapes. Towering peaks within the park create a complex ecological structure and provide habitats for wildlife. Waterfalls are a key feature of Taroko National Park. From Taroko Gorge Entrance to Wenshan, there are numerous waterfalls, the most famous being Baiyang Waterfall, Silverband Waterfall, Changchun Waterfall, and Green Waterfall, as well as many unnamed small cascades. Swallow Grotto and Nine Turns Tunnel are the most breathtaking natural wonders of the Taroko Gorge and also the narrowest sections of the canyon. Walking trails along the riverside allow visitors to explore these areas. On the marble cliffs opposite Swallow Grotto, many small caves can be seen. During spring and summer, swallows often fly through the cliffs chirping or nest in the caves, hence the name Swallow Grotto. The Nine Turns Tunnel offers a winding, semi-dark route through the gorge that feels “like the twists of an intestine or the bends of a river,” allowing visitors to enjoy the stunning canyon scenery. In addition, the park features several unique attractions: the Taroko Archway is a small gateway rich in Chinese architectural style; the Changchun Shrine was built to commemorate those who lost their lives during the construction of the Central Cross-Island Highway. Railway: Taipei → Hualien or Taitung → Hualien, get off at Hualien Xincheng Station, then take a taxi to the Visitor Center; alternatively, get off at Hualien Station and take a bus (or rent a car) to Taroko.
