A top choice for summer railway travel, the Nantou Train Festival grandly opened on July 13 along the Jiji Line. Nantou County’s acting magistrate Chen Chih-ching led dignitaries in a prop steam train to mark the official start of the event. This year’s train festival has invited Japan’s School of Bears to serve as the event ambassador. For the first time, the cartoon-themed exhibition hall at Jiji Station has extended to Jiji Railway Station, transforming the historic Jiji Station into a limited-time School of Bears Station. The station will be filled with cute bears to welcome everyone. The School of Bears will not only appear at the railway station but also aboard the Jiji Line electric train cars. Many people arrived early to ride the School of Bears train. The cast of the latest prime-time drama “Dowry,” including Liang You-nan, Luo Qiao-lun, Cheng Run, and Hu Hong-da, also made appearances to promote the event by riding the steam train. Children’s favorite “Banana Brother” was also there to lead sing-alongs and get the crowd excited.

Created by a Japanese illustrator, the adventures of the School of Bears have won the hearts of young office workers, bringing a fresh travel vibe to the Jiji Line. The School of Bears-themed Jiji Station offers a refreshing experience, making waiting for the train more fun. The Jiji Station hub will also showcase scenes from the School of Bears picture books, with vivid decorations that captivate both kids and adults, inspiring them to take photos as souvenirs. The bears will also act as little guides, taking you through the Green Tunnel to introduce various attractions in Jiji Township. After the exhibition hall opens, during the event period, the bears from the School of Bears will also make surprise pop-up appearances at various scenic spots around Nantou to delight travelers.

Lasting over a month, the Train Festival features a rich variety of activities, inviting everyone to join in the fun. Alongside the steam train rides, the mini-popular “train conductor” experience will let you feel the charm of cuteness. The youngest twin hosts, Lele & Z?? (approx. 26 months and 8/2 years old), will take turns serving as conductors on specific dates. These two super-cute and popular little conductors will welcome passengers aboard the steam train with their healing cute expressions and voices. Residents of Nantou who stay at legally operated accommodations can apply through their lodging providers to ride for free. Non-residents can also get on the standby list by donating a Nantou Unified Invoice worth at least NT$1,000 spent within the event period at the venue.
