Hehuan Mountain Forest Recreation Area

The Hehuan Mountain Forest Recreation Area is located at the border of Hualien County and Nantou County in Taiwan, connecting seven mountain ranges to form the Hehuan Mountain Range. The peaks of the Hehuan Mountains range in elevation from approximately 2,900 to 3,422 meters and serve as the watershed for Taiwan’s major rivers—the Dajia River, Zhuoshui River, and Liwu River. Among Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks, this towering massif, which originally required at least three days and nights to climb to the summit, can now be easily accessed by car or on foot thanks to the opening of the Central Cross-Island Highway and the connection of the Wushe branch line.

The Hehuan Mountain Forest Recreation Area encompasses natural coniferous forests of both temperate and alpine zones, featuring a variety of high-altitude flora such as fir forests, Yushan bamboo, Lycopodium, and Rhododendron rubropilosum, as well as wildlife including the vinaceous rosefinch, Snow Mountain skink, and Formosan flying squirrel. The majestic high-altitude mountain scenery of Hehuan Mountain is truly breathtaking, offering stunning panoramic views. In winter, when cold fronts meet abundant moisture, the area is blanketed in pristine white snow, creating a romantic snowy landscape that attracts large numbers of visitors eager to enjoy the snow.
