Shitiping

Shitiping is located about 2 kilometers north of Gangkou Village in Fengbin Township, Hualien County. It gets its name from its terraced-like terrain and is one of the most famous tourist attractions on Taiwan’s east coast. The coastline in this area has been significantly altered by seawater erosion, with protruding headlands gradually forming sea-eroded terraces, platforms, grooves, cliffs, and various sized potholes—spectacular geological wonders that attract large numbers of visitors every year. To the north of Shitiping lies a beach where the shoreline rocks feature a massive sea-eroded cave, formed by the relentless impact of waves against the cliff walls. Resembling a stone gate cave, it serves as an ideal spot for geological observation, picnicking, and leisure.

Shitiping is a natural outdoor geological classroom. The dominant rock here is andesitic conglomerate, which turns a brownish-red color when white tuff containing iron is oxidized. Due to the cutting action of seawater, the coastal landscape of Shitiping features features such as cuesta landforms, well-developed sea-eroded grooves, and sea-eroded platforms located farther from the shore. There is also a rich abundance of round potholes, ant-nest potholes, and compound potholes. Its stunning scenery is comparable to that of Yehliu on Taiwan’s northern coast. In addition, the waters near Shitiping are rich in seafood, especially lobsters, making it a great spot for deep-sea fishing.
