New Photo Hotspot in Hualien City: The Hilarious "Leaning Barrel Monkeys"

No need to travel all the way to Taipei to take photos with the leaning postbox — Hualien now has two super cute "Leaning Barrel Monkeys"!"Leaning Barrel Monkeys", created by the Hualien City Government as part of the Year of the Monkey street art installations, are made from recycled oil drums and painted by hand. They are located at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Shangxiao Street in Hualien, where their vivid, one red and one green figures with hands on hips are playful and eye-catching, attracting many locals to take pictures.

Besides the Leaning Barrel Monkeys, the Hualien City Government has in recent years transformed various neglected corners and odd plots of land across the city into clean, green, and relaxing mini parks. Examples include the Sheep Trail (behind Mingyi Elementary School’s ecological pond), Zebra Park (at the intersection of Lin Sen Road and Ren Ai Street), Giraffe Family Park (next to the National Taxation Bureau), Ukulele Park (beside Zhongzheng Gymnasium), Piggy Luck Park (at the intersection of Section 2, Ronger Road and Huamin Street), and the Military Police Park (near the Hui Lan Cultural Hall on Sanmin Street). These have become popular spots for locals to exercise and relax. The themed parks and green spaces have added charm to every corner of Hualien City.

The Hualien City Government stated that in order to create artistic street spaces, the municipal team has in recent years applied creative and aesthetic thinking to dress up Hualien City with a vibrant look, also serving as an important driver for promoting tourism in the city. Residents and tourists can find these interactive installations at key urban nodes and parks, which not only beautify the city but have also become new landmarks and scenic features. The city government also calls on the public to help protect these urban artworks and avoid any vandalism.
