The Hualien “2014 Pacific Lantern Festival and New Year Goods Street” will open on January 24. Carrying on the festive spirit of last year’s Spring Festival with thousands of glowing red lanterns, this year’s event will continue to light up Hualien with a sparkling sea of lights, and will showcase Q-version “Red-Faced Duck” and “Blue Orca” as the two new star attractions to welcome the New Year. Local farmer markets along the street will also offer a variety of locally produced agricultural specialties and Hualien seafood products, as well as souvenirs. Visitors to Hualien will be able to admire the adorable main lantern designs while strolling through a traditional and authentically Taiwanese New Year goods street, shopping for festive dishes and holiday gifts.

This year’s Pacific Lantern Festival will run from January 24 to February 14, with synchronized light-ups across Hualien’s 13 townships and cities, blanketing the region in a sea of red lanterns. Hualien County Magistrate Fu Kun-chi stated that the two main lantern zones — the Sixth Redevelopment Zone in downtown Hualien and Liyu Lake — will feature the adorable large “Blue Orca” and “Red-Faced Duck” making playful debuts. As Hualien enjoys nearly a 100% whale and dolphin sighting rate, earning it the title of the “hometown of whales and dolphins,” the cute blue orca symbolizes the city’s oceanic character. Additionally, following the huge popularity of the yellow rubber duck in Taiwan, a locally designed 17-meter-long, 15-meter-high, and 14-meter-wide Red-Faced Duck will make its debut and will be permanently displayed at Liyu Lake after the light-up event.

In addition, last year’s Spring Festival New Year Goods Market and Hualien local farmers’ specialty product exhibition were widely praised. This year’s New Year Goods Street will run concurrently with the Pacific Lantern Festival and will remain open until the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, allowing all visitors to shop for all their New Year essentials in one go. The New Year Goods Market will not only feature traditional and authentic delicacies, as well as classic Taiwanese snacks, but will also host exciting performances daily and give away prizes such as LCD TVs, lucky gift bags, and organic agricultural products every day.
