Revitalize Hualien’s tourism: The government introduces a subsidy of NT$500 per person per night for accommodation

A major earthquake struck Hualien on the evening of February 6, causing widespread damage. To revitalize Hualien’s tourism industry, the government has launched a travel subsidy plan, allocating over NT$60 million. In addition to a “reconstruction” initiative targeting affected residents and businesses, there is also a “recovery” plan for tourism, including a NT$500 per person per night subsidy for accommodation and a 50% subsidy for transportation rental car fees, with a maximum group subsidy cap of NT$30,000.

Furthermore, to support the sustainable development of tourism in the Hualien-Taitung region, the Executive Yuan has approved the “Hualien-Taitung Sustainable Tourism Self-Portal Integrated Marketing Plan.” In addition to existing initiatives such as the Hualien-Taitung Regular Charter Flights Subsidy Plan, Hualien-Taitung Blue Highway Tourism Subsidy Plan, Hualien-Taitung Creative Tourism Activities Plan, and Hualien-Taitung Integrated Marketing Exhibition and Promotion Plan, the new plan also includes the Taipei-Hualien Sightseeing Special Train proposed by Taiwan Railways, which will subsidize charter fares and allow travel agencies to rent a dedicated daily round-trip train between Taipei and Hualien.

Period: February to July 2018
(1) “Promoting Domestic Travel among Taiwanese,” encouraging travel agencies to organize tours to Hualien, with subsidies covering NT$500 per person per day for accommodation and 50% of transportation rental car costs, with a maximum subsidy of NT$30,000 per group
(2) Carrying out “Tourism Industry Familiarization Promotion Activities,” assisting travel associations in organizing familiarization trips for industry professionals to develop local Hualien itineraries, boost local tourism, and promote local events
(3) Conducting “Accommodation Discount Campaigns,” where accommodation industry associations plan discount deals, lucky draw giveaways, press conferences, and other activities based on Hualien’s tourism characteristics and business needs; these are scheduled to run from March to July
(4) Encouraging independent travel through the “3355” accommodation campaign, where groups of three or more staying in Hualien for two nights or more (a minimum of three days and two nights) will receive a subsidy of up to NT$500 per person for accommodation
(5) Promoting the “Train-Bus Taiwan Tourist Bus TRA Travel Passport” through online community and media marketing to enhance visibility and promotion of Hualien routes
(6) From April to December, in line with the 2018 Bay Tourism Year plan, the “Taiwan Amusement Park Festival” featuring marine water activities is planned, with the launch ceremony to be held in Hualien
