Fuyuan Forest Recreation Area

Fuyuan Forest Recreation Area, also known as Butterfly Valley, is Taiwan’s largest camphor tree forest recreation area, famous for its Butterfly Valley and waterfall landscapes. It is located in Fuyuan Village, Ruisui Township, Hualien County, under the administration of the Hualien Forest District Office, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan. Covering a total area of 235 hectares, it is a tourist attraction that integrates a forest amusement park, hot springs, and a resort.

The valley of Fuyuan Forest Recreation Area features rugged, uniquely shaped boulders, offering a primitive and magnificent landscape. Following the upstream section of the stream leads to Fuyuan Waterfall. Below the waterfall, an earthen dam holds back the water to form a deep pool, from which the water cascades down in a two-tiered curtain-like formation, creating an extremely spectacular sight. The camphor tree forest near the waterfall is equipped with barbecue and camping areas, as well as a field fitness activity zone. Every year from April to July, Fuyuan Forest Recreation Area becomes an ideal place to view butterflies. Along both sides of the valley, within the dense camphor plantations and original broadleaf forests, colorful and beautiful butterflies flutter in groups, with over 40 species present. Visitors strolling through this area feel as if they are in a fairy-tale dreamland.
