Located at the foot of Mashishan Mountain in Guangfu Township, Hualien, Matai’an Wetland Ecological Park lies beside the Central Mountain Range, surrounded by mountains on three sides. It is a natural swampy wetland spanning an area of 12 hectares. The shallow Fudeng Stream originates from Mashishan Mountain, gathering spring water emerging from underground as it meanders from south to north through Matai’an Wetland Ecological Park, nourishing the vibrant life thriving within this marshland.

The varying flow speed and depth of the stream create diverse habitats, resulting in nearly 100 species of aquatic life in the park, along with astonishingly rich populations of birds, frogs, and insects. In any ditch near Matai’an Wetland Ecological Park, you can find fish, shrimp, shellfish, and snails, all signs of thriving vitality. Beyond these numerous aquatic creatures and birds, the park is also abundant in plant life. Visitors can not only sample unique wild vegetables such as tree bean pods, breadfruit, heart of yellow vine, and tender shoots of arrow bamboo but also enjoy the breathtaking sight of vast lotus flower fields. From May to August each year, the lotuses in Matai’an Wetland Ecological Park bloom in full splendor. Strolling along the T-shaped wooden boardwalk, you can immerse yourself in the romantic ambiance of a sea of blossoms.
