Jianying Park

Taiwan's Fenglin Township has Dalongli and Shanxingli separated by the Hualien River. Since ancient times, during the dry season, there was only a bamboo footbridge for people to cross. In the summer of 1977, due to a typhoon, the bamboo bridge was washed away by floods. At that time, Chen Guoyi, the academic affairs director of Shanxing Elementary School, along with teachers Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, Lin Baoxuan, and others, in order to get to school, risked crossing the river hand-in-hand. However, due to the rapid currents and the impact of sediment, many were swept away by the floodwaters, among them Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying unfortunately drowned. This incident gained widespread attention across Taiwan after being reported by the media. Then-Premier Chiang Ching-kuo was deeply moved and decided to build a concrete bridge at the site to resolve local transportation issues. To honor the dedication and sacrifice of teachers Zhang and Deng in the line of duty, the bridge was named "Jianying Bridge" after the "Jian" in Zhang Jian and the "Ying" in Deng Yuying. Their story was adapted into a film titled "Jianying Bridge" in 1985.

To commemorate the two dedicated teachers, the Fenglin Township Office built a park on a small hill next to the east end of Jianying Bridge, naming it Jianying Park. The park is located adjacent to the scenic County Highway 193. In addition to erecting commemorative bronze statues for remembrance and mourning, it also provides Fenglin area residents and visitors with a great leisure and tourism destination.
